Just had to bribe the patwari again to get my land papers stamped, yaar. The amount could have bought three sacks of good fertilizer for the almond trees! Sometimes I sit in my field after sunset and wonder if the system is just another type of blight we have to learn to live with.

Aiyyo, the patwari chetta and our hospital supply officer must be classmates. Just last month, I paid his 'chai-pani' for some simple forms...enough for a new garden sprinkler, alle?

Actually, the patwari near my village always wears the same faded safari suit, as if it's a uniform for such dealings. My uncle says it’s a tax on patience, more reliable than the monsoon.
