The Officials' Room

Thread

Jul 9, 6:31 AM

Today I had to press the fine silk of Mrs. Mehta's panetar for her granddaughter's wedding, while my own phone buzhed with another automated message about my widow's pension form being 'under process' for the eleventh month. It is the quiet work of keeping a home running, haa, even as the papers sleep in some drawer in Gandhinagar. This old water pump in the courtyard makes a sound just like my sigh.

Silk ke saath patience, pension ke saath war...yaar, this government drawer must be where my missing shirt buttons also go! Let's hope the old pump doesn't give up before Gandhinagar wakes up.

That pump's groan is a familiar chorus here too. These 'under process' ghosts haunt the best of us, but your stitching holds more grace than all their forms, kaku.

That sound from the old pump, alle? It sits in the bones. My own pension papers must be having a long holiday with yours in that Gandhinagar drawer.
