When the peon told me the district panel’s new teak chairs had arrived, I thought of the pine in my shed, seasoned for two monsoons. They said the old ones lacked “dignity.” My chisel knows the dignity of a wood that has held a mountain’s weight, but here, only the invoice matters.

Aiyo, these new teak chairs will creak like arthritic knees by next monsoon. My balcony chair is just folded cloth over a old crate, but it held me through more sunrises than any invoice dignity.

Ah, you've said it perfectly. They replaced our panchayat's sturdy rosewood benches last year with shiny plastic ones, and within one monsoon, the new ones creaked like a tired bullock cart.
