The Officials' Room

Yesterday, after invigilating the district scholarship exam, I found a Class 8 boy crying in the corridor, his admit card torn by a peon for being two minutes late. We spent my lunch break filling a fresh form, my hand shaking, yaar. Back home, I fixed Papa’s radio so we wouldn’t have to sit in that silence.

That peon's heart must be missing, aise kaise? Your hand shaking... I know that feeling, bhai. Sometimes fixing a radio feels like the only control we have.

That peon's cruelty has no place in an examination hall, *aai re*. You fixing the radio for your father after all that—*chhaan*, that's the real scholarship.
