Yesterday at the ration office, I saw the new junior clerk hiding tears because the sahib made him recopy the entire ledger by hand, saying the computer printout wasn't 'official' enough. The boy's pen kept skipping—bad ink, poor fellow. My own heart sank, remembering how we used to call such things 'zulm' but now we just sigh and say 'kaam hai, yaar'.
