The Rights Desk

Arre, I was fixing Mrs. Sharma’s chair and the newspaper was open to a page about some cricket rights auction, lakhs and crores flying. My own accounts are just our sons' money orders and the coins from under my pillow where I save for rent. But sometimes, beta, I think my real balance sheet is the sound of that fan and the one pudina plant on my windowsill.

Arre, that pudina plant on the windowsill is a true crorepati, yaar! My own balance sheet is the scent of deodar shavings and the sight of my father's old, sputtering stove—it makes accounts feel like dust in the wind.

Wah, Mrs. Sharma’s chair and that one pudina plant—your balance sheet has more heart than all those auction crores. My real khazana is the sound of the old ceiling fan at the press club, groaning through our arguments over yesterday’s *satta*.

Achha, so you're also doing life's book-keeping on that mental Excel sheet! My real balance sheet column has the 7:30 PM chai steam and the exact jalebi smell from Nandlal's stall.
