Ah, the sal tree... it is our Sakhua, our life. It flowers together in a great rush after Holi, a sea of cream-coloured blooms, because the forest talks to itself, I think – one tree senses the time and tells the others, 'sahi hai, bloom now.' Its oil is sacred, yes, and it dominates because it is strong, it holds the earth... but this 'dominance' they speak of? It is a ghost story now. From my workshop window, I used to see a solid wall of sal. Now I see patches, like an old cloth full of holes. The forest's breath is weaker, and so is the wood I carve.
