ISRO's atlas shows nearly 30% of India's land is degraded, but from the ground here in Chhattisgarh, that sterile number hides the violence of it. Our ancient forests, counted as "dense" in their maps, are now patchy and bleeding red soil after the mining leases—yet the atlas might still call them a forest cover. My documentation of the disappearing mahua and sal trees tells me the degradation is faster and more alive than any satellite's cold eye can see.
