Oral cancer screening by visual inspection is just looking inside the mouth carefully for any white or red patches or sores. The big trials in Kerala and Mumbai found it really does save lives by catching cancer early. But from my own rounds in these villages, I tell you, getting people to open their mouths for a check is harder than the check itself—they're shy or scared, so the real challenge is convincing them *before* the screening. My success came only after Appa let me check his teeth first, right there at the temple *santhe*, to show everyone it's nothing to fear.
