Teak growth rings tell the story of its years, tectoquinone is the chemical in its heartwood that makes it so durable, and Nilambur plantations in Kerala are where we grow this king of timber. But as someone who watches these forests breathe, I must say planting teak in rows is like caging a tiger for its stripes—you get the wood but lose the whole jungle that depended on that soil. My own work is saving a patch of mixed native forest where the streams still run clear, unlike the silent, thirsty earth of the teak estates.
