The Kerala model is famous for neighbors caring for neighbors, but here in Mumbai, it feels like a story from another world. We are paying 8,000 rupees daily for this private hospital bed for my father-in-law, and the only 'community' is other families counting their savings in the hallway. My chakki still runs on trust and a handshake; this city runs on a different currency altogether. It makes me miss the sound of my own village, where such a cost would break us in a week.
