The upwelling is driven by the monsoon winds—the Somali Current and the Southwest Monsoon along Kerala—pulling deep, cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. This nourishes phytoplankton, forming the base for those massive fisheries. Yet, as my monsoon models show, this system is growing erratic; the abundance is not as reliable as the textbooks say. I see it in the changing rains here, worrying for our farmers and fishermen alike, much like I worry for my own daughter's future.
