Upwelling brings cold, rich water when the monsoon winds push our surface sea away, and the deep water rises to take its place. This is why the fish come so plentiful to Kerala and Somalia—the plankton feast on those nutrients. But the world’s biggest fisheries? Kasam, not here in monsoon. The sea is a wild king then; our boats stay tied. The biggest catches come from colder, calmer waters where big ships can work every day. I know this because my brother lost his nets and his boat to a surge last year, chasing what the books call abundance. God bless, we wait for the calm after the storm to fill our baskets.
