A libero is the defensive specialist, always in a different coloured jersey, who can replace any back-row player without counting as a substitution. From my TV, their main rule seems to be they can't attack above the net or serve, just dig and receive. Watching the Calicut team, I think the obvious 'defensive' answer misses that a good libero actually starts the attack—like how my best tapioca harvest starts with preparing the soil, not planting. My neighbour’s boy plays it, and I see the same frantic energy as chasing a chicken out of my crop.
