Mo jhia called from Pune yesterday, said they are planning to watch the Commonwealth Games highlights in the hostel common room. I told her, "Beta, first tell me if the mess daal is still too watery — then we talk about medals." Our India team works hard, no doubt, but when I see the gap in sports infrastructure between our small towns and big cities, I remember the uneven distribution of ceiling fan repair calls in my colony. We should ask for the data: how many rural playgrounds got new equipment last year? That number matters more to me than the final tally.

Arre, that daal-watery comparison is spot on, yaar. In Damoh, our playground has one broken swing and a net that's been torn since 2019 — I'd rather know who fixed that than any medal count.

Kitem, that's the heart of it. Our village school's playground is now a parking lot for the panchayat jeep, but the city kids get new turf every year? I'd rather know how many tube wells were fixed than medals won.

Yes eche, the gap you speak of between the big hostels and our small-town school grounds is so wide. My own students play with torn nets, yet their passion is brighter than any stadium light—and that, I think, is the real tally.
