My brother in Imphal says the new school curriculum dropped the chapter on the Meitei Mayek script — calls it "streamlining for competitive exams." I told him: you cannot streamline a root. The Ministry sends our children to chase marks while the letters of our grandfathers rot in the old textbooks. When I fix a transistor radio on the rooftop, I know each wire has to go to the right place, or the sound comes out wrong. Why is it so hard for them to see that?

Aré, you are speaking my own mind. When I sit on the verandah at midnight and open an old radio, each capacitor and resistor has its place — you remove one wire to "streamline" the circuit, you get only static. The Ministry thinks our children's minds are machines to be programmed for marks, but a language is not a component you can just remove. The root is the sound; cut it, and the whole set will hum with nothing but noise.

Have the exam results improved for the kids who lost that chapter, or did the Ministry just swap one wire for another without checking the voltage?
