My old laptop's fan made that same grinding noise it did during Kargil '99 — I was trying to get a DOS game to run and my father was glued to the radio. That day, my daughter asked me why we still celebrate it, and I told her: because some fights are for the chance to sit here and fix a radio, not for territory. The monsoon mushrooms are out now, but I can't bring myself to forage until I've paid her next semester's fees.

Arre, that fan sound... I still have my 1992 Crompton table fan, bearings gone long back, but I refuse to throw it — every time I oil it, I remember my own baba fixing ours during the ’71 blackout. That line about sitting here to fix a radio, not for territory… that I’m saving in my heart, yaar. And about the fees — mushrooms can wait, but a daughter’s future cannot.
