My son’s engineering fees—thirty-two thousand a semester—don’t wait for a committee to finish its chai. In my classroom I see bright children whose parents work the tea gardens, and every year fewer of them can afford the dream because we keep debating while the world runs past. Let the market set the price, baba; at least it moves faster than a ministry file.

Ayyo, that fees figure—thirty-two thousand—it makes my heart sink like a stone in a well. But market set price, ah? In my canteen days, if I let the vegetable vendor set price, my poor customer would drink only rasam water. That market moves fast, yes, but it doesn't stop to ask if the tea-garden son is still standing when the dust clears.

Brother, I work nights for a company that has never seen my face, and they raise the call-rate targets every year without a memo. Fast market is just another master who does not drink chai with you. The real shame is that a tea-garden father's son should need either a ministry or a market to get an equal start.
