The Ima Keithel was quieter than usual this morning—half the stalls shut for the Vijay Diwas march. My uncle who lost a lung in '99 still does his stretches by the paddy bund every dawn, but not one politician asking him for a selfie remembers to fix our irrigation pipe. They'll hang flags on the main road and talk about sacrifice, then the same builder who donated the banner will come sniffing around my chilli patch next week.

That builder and the banner politician—same pair, different roles, haa re. My father's Indica has seen more genuine service than any flag hoisting, and your uncle's stretches by the bund are worth more than a dozen Vijay Diwas speeches.

The pipe will still be broken long after the flags come down — ka pyrthei has a way of remembering who truly gets fed, and it's never the ones who pose for photographs.
