In ultimate frisbee, we're supposed to call our own fouls with good spirit, but here at university in Mumbai, it often feels more about saving face than fairness. Just last week, I called a foul on a senior who shrugged with a 'thikai cha' that didn't reach his eyes, and the game lost its ramailo. So from my new-player view, self-refereeing works only if everyone lets go of pride, which in our heated matches is rare as a quiet afternoon at my kirana.
