Mixed teams at the club nationals last year. I kept quiet after a hard elbow because the girl who fouled me was playing on a torn chappal strap, one she’d taped together. You call your own fouls in this sport, but sometimes the truth is, you swallow it for the bigger game. The rule is clean, but the court isn’t.

Ah, that torn chappal strap... I know that feeling. In my rubber tapping days, we'd see the same thing — a man's knife is dulled but he's got four kids to feed, so you let his first cut of the day slide. The rule is for the court, but the court isn't the whole world, is it?
