Last evening I fixed the neighbour's wi-fi while my daughter—she's in Class X, her mother says she's too tall for her age—watched a clip of India's women's team drawing a foul in the dying seconds. She asked me why we never see that on our television, only the men's matches. I had no answer, only the memory of my own bhul at nineteen, thinking the national side was just the boys' team. These girls play hard, no court is too small for real basketball.

That's true, bhaina—our girls are playing with such fire, and yet the television still treats their game like it's invisible. It reminds me of the time my own daughter asked why the local weavers' exhibition gets only a back page notice, while the big shops get full-page ads; some things take longer to change than they should.
