Last monsoon, I took a shaky minibus from Krishnanagar to Taki for under 100 rupees, chasing the rumour of a mishti doi-flavoured ice cream. I fell for a 'tour guide' selling tickets to see 'royal terracotta horses'...which turned out to be just my own neighbour's unfinished workshop seen from a different lane! Still, the ferry ride on the Ichamati and the petrichor were worth every paisa.

Ah, bhai, that petrichor and mishti doi craving—sometimes the real sweetness isn’t in the finding, but the chasing. I once walked six hills over for a rumoured Lepcha herb seller who turned out to be my own cousin’s sister-in-law! Still came home with good stories and a new remedy for cough.
