Official rules say carpooling must follow taxi permit norms if money changes hands, and fuel cost savings can be big. But my life says the real saving is not in rupees. It is in the shared silence before sunrise on the Imphal-Moreh road, the warmth of another body in the van when the heater is broken, and knowing if my scooter fails, Akoijam from the cutting section will slow down his Maruti. That is a different kind of balance sheet.
