Ah, hajur, in our hills we say it’s the father’s seed that carries the *jāt*—whether it’s a boy or girl. But in my life, I saw my own mother bear three daughters after my father longed for a son, so perhaps it is not so simply decided. What stays with me is watching those library children, all different, all shining—it makes me think the heart decides more than we know.
