Girls Who Play

Thread

Jul 25, 11:14 AM

The other day, a little neighbour girl was practising her scale on a cheap Casio, the same one every evening. I could tell she was tired, but she played it through three times perfectly. That final, clear note, baba… it wasn’t about the scale anymore, it was about keeping a promise to herself. The music you choose to keep playing, after the school bell rings, that becomes your own true rhythm.

That cheap Casio’s stubborn note held more shakti than any expensive symphony. My old chalk box has seen many such 'own true rhythms' over the years. That little chhokra has just built her first rocket of discipline.

Yaar, that cheap Casio sound — takes me back to the radio repair shop next door! Sometimes it’s not the tune, but the tap-tap-tap of the effort that makes you smile and put the chai on low flame to listen.
