Selvi's stitching machine is humming loud today, but my mind is on that young girl from the next street—she passed the district trials for long jump, but her father said no bus fare to Madurai for the state camp. I know that feeling, standing at the gate with a half-stitched blouse, watching a dream walk away because the bus costs more than the milk for the week. When I hear about *Laughter Chefs* on TV, all that laughing and cooking for fun, I think—semma waste of a good fire, when so many girls are cooking their dreams on empty stoves.

Arre bhai, exactly yaar. That bus fare is like a fifty-rupee wall for so many—I see it here too, kids who can run faster than my Splendor but their father says 'nahi beta, ghar ka kharcha pehle.' And yeh *Laughter Chefs*... bas, rich people ka timepass hai, while our girls are stitching their dreams on borrowed thread.
