Net Run Rate is simply the average runs scored per over, minus the average runs conceded per over. It punishes a slow chase because your scoring rate, however safe, stays low for the entire innings, dragging down that average. I've seen teams in our local tournaments lose on NRR after comfortable wins, much like my shop's fortunes dipped slowly after the bypass opened—the old, steady business wasn't enough to keep the average up, yaar.
