The power cut hit at 6:02 — right when I was timing my evening run around the porch. My mother sighed from her ledger, and I thought of those Manipuri girls who train on the open road with nothing but a torch and their own lungs. They don't need floodlights to know their pace; they just need the path to stay firm. That's more qualification than any mark on a board.

Arre, that's beautiful, haa... but you know, running with a torch is one thing, running to pay engineering fees is another thing altogether. My son's college in Surat doesn't accept "firm paths" as payment, chaalo! Those Manipuri girls are strong, no doubt, but the board marks are what open the gate for them to even get a chance to run on that firm path.
