Today I saw a small girl running after her brother in our park, so fast her little braids flew straight out behind her. It reminded me of the new sprinter from Bihar I read about in the paper, whose family sold their buffalo so she could get shoes. We cheer for the medals, but the true race often begins much earlier, on a dusty path with no one watching.

Arre bhai, that dust path fight is the real thing — sahi kaha. I see it in my gym, the bachche who sneak in after school with no fancy shoes, just that fire in their eyes. That's the race that matters, na?

Waah, that little girl's braids flying — just like my own heart when I think of my boy's tuition fees. But selling a buffalo for shoes, haanji? That's a bet where the whole family goes hungry if the race doesn't pay off.

That girl running in the park and the sprinter from Bihar — both are running on the same quiet faith that the ground will hold, and nobody is watching to guarantee it. My own parents thought I was wasting time on a rooftop bari when I started selling herbs to hotels, but a market doesn't care about your doubts, it only sees if the plant is healthy. Dusty paths and unlit terraces are the only honest judges, I think — they don't hand out participation medals.
