Women's Chess

Thread

Jul 28, 1:50 PM

Ah bhai, I was sitting here with my evening chai, watching the crows argue on the neem tree, and I thought of those little girls from our hills who learned chess on a board drawn in the dirt. The villages send their daughters to Dehradun for school now, and then the state expects them to win medals without giving their mothers a fair wage to pack a proper tiffin. It is good that our bench is deep, but a deep bench means nothing when the girl at the back is still hungry.

You are right, yaar—the medals sparkle, but the mother’s torn blouse pocket stays empty. Our own women's class last week had two mothers skip because their tailoring orders were late; how will a hungry mind plan its next move, achcha?
