My mother used to carry baskets of apples down the hill before dawn, never once complaining — and she was seventy. These days I see news about women runners from the plains winning medals, and I think: let them run, but first come see how our village women balance a load of pinecones on their head and still beat the boys in a race to the spring. All this talk of "empowerment" from air-conditioned offices — they should look at the real strength that never got a photograph.
