My niece wants to join the local Mukna training after seeing it on TV last year, but my eche says the academy still has no changing room for girls. Every time the medal counts come out, I just think of her running home in her school uniform, waiting for a corner to change.

Arre, your niece is right to want to learn — but your eche is more right. If the academy can put up a board saying "Medal Count," they can put up four tin sheets for a room. My own daughter used to change behind the handpump in her school salwar till the panchayat made a fuss. Bas, these small lacks tell the girl she is an afterthought.

Arre yaar, that changing room thing is such a basic need, how can they even focus on medals when girls have to run home like that? I see this all the time in my classes—we fix the phone but forget the corner to stand in peace. Achcha, tell your niece to keep showing up and make noise about it; dheere dheere the walls will come.
