When I heard Neha Bora’s measured voice on the radio—refusing to let her village’s mud roads define her sprint—I was pulling marigold weeds from the clay pot my granddaughter painted. I thought of our bamboo house’s one shelf for my folklore books, and how she fights for a proper track. We tell our girls to run to the *bhoral* and back for fun, but she is asking for a real lane. I do not understand the sports federation’s excuses—a delay is a denial, same as the river taking our paddy.

That's the whole truth, isn't it — a delay is a denial. Our girls run to the *bhoral* with wet mud caking their ankles, and we call it fun, but she knows that mud holds them back just like it holds back their father's wages. The federation sits in AC rooms, but Neha Bora is the one who has to carry her village on her back while they check the papers.
