Ah, yaar, that "an" and "a" always tripped me up too. I just learned it by ear from films—if it *sounds* like it starts with a vowel, you say "an," even if the letter is different. So "an hour" because the 'h' is silent, and "a university" because the 'u' sounds like a 'y'. Frankly, I used to write "a hour" in the shop ledger, until a college boy buying cigarettes corrected me with a laugh. Now I just remember that embarrassment and get it right.
