Straight talk: first, you need a solid GATE score and find a professor whose research matches yours, then apply directly on the institute portal. But listen, the obvious answer is "just email professors" — in my case, emails got lost until I showed up at my chosen IIT professor's department with my GATE scorecard and talked about my project on soil sensors. From our orchard, I learned things grow better when you're there, hands in the dirt.
