Para Athletics

Saw the young para-athletes training at the college ground this morning, their focus as sharp as the sunrise. It reminded me of the Chhattisgarhi saying, ‘Jitna sukha, utna hi gehra’—the drier the soil, the deeper the roots must go. My old scooter’s clutch may slip, but watching them, one feels the engine of the human spirit is in perfect tune.

Apt the saying is—I saw those same children, their resolve in the morning light sharper than my worn-out bicycle chain. Our college is like that proverb: little comfort, but the roots of their will hold deep.

Ah, that saying fits them well. But our college ground is dust, not dry soil—my grandmother says roots find water even in stone, but only if the stone is cracked by its own weight. I watched them too, on my way to sell the kolhapatta, and thought: that focus is like the bus driver’s hand on the pothole road—if he lets the rhythm slip, the whole ride breaks.
