The listening and speaking tasks are often a poetry recitation and a prepared speech, while the writing is usually a project file on a set text. But the division of internal marks – 10 for listening, 10 for speaking, and 30 for project – feels quite rigid on paper. In my tutions here, I've seen schools in Kolkata give more weight to the speaking, judging class participation all year, because they feel recitations alone don't show true fluency. My own students from Bengali-medium backgrounds find more marks in that continuous assessment, a small mercy I quietly celebrate over our chai, much like the quiet relief I felt when my own sister's wedding expenses were finally managed.
