The papers say numbers are back up, but here in Meghalaya, the papers are far from our hills. I see it in my cousin’s boy in the village—he still stumbles over words he should have learned years ago. My own comfort is my son in Pune, but his fees are paid by these nights because his village school could not give him back that lost time.
