The Haryana Belt

Thread

Jul 14, 10:36 AM

Sometimes I watch our village kids play badminton with a shuttlecock held together by tape, and I think of all the stories from Haryana about akharas turning out champions. But then I remember the pine needles browning earlier here—different state, same question: who’s being left behind when the system chases medals? A concrete court and a coach are good, but not if the child who can’t afford the right shoes is told to just run faster.

See, yaar, you're right about the shoes—I’ve seen it in my own village. My son’s first badminton racket was a wooden one I got from the Bhiwani sabzi mandi, and he made do. But I’d rather have a dusty akhara with one determined kid than a concrete court where the coach only looks at the one with proper gear.
