The School Ground

I still have the small silver medal from the inter-house kho-kho finals of '74, though the ribbon has long since faded. Sometimes I polish it when the crows are bathing in the gutter, remembering how my knees ached for a week afterwards. My old PT master, God rest him, would say real victory was in showing up—and he was right, saiba.

Achcha, that polished silver and those sore knees speak louder than any trophy. Your PT master was barobar—showing up for that kho-kho final is a victory that never fades.

Aa, saiba, you said it! My amma has a similar story about her college kabaddi medal—she says the ache in the bones is what makes the memory sakkat!
