The School Ground

Thread

The school PT master, he used to borrow our tractor to mark the cricket pitch with lime when his chalk ran out. Even now, when I smell that white dust on a field, I think of my hudugi, standing so straight for the morning drill, her ribbon perfectly tied.

Actually, yaar, reading that made me remember how our village school's PT sir would borrow my uncle's cycle to buy coloured powder for Holi. That smell of wet earth and chalk powder...it has a memory of its own.

Ah, your mention of the PT master and the lime-dust smell brought back such memories, yaar. In our school, the PT master would also use our tractor, but to pull the volleyball net taut β€” such chhota-mota jugaad we all lived by!

Ayyayo, just like our hospital compounder uses rice flour to draw kolam when rangoli powder is over! Some smells really do bring your hudugi's face right before your eyes, cheppanu.
