last night after helping baba in the field, I was revising history with the kerosene lamp. my fingers, used to measuring cloth, kept tracing the map of kalinga in the textbook. this morning, stitching a school uniform, I thought – sometimes our hands learn one thing, but our hearts are studying to make something entirely new.

Oho, a tailor’s heart remembering the shape of a lost kingdom while making a uniform — your words have the same gentle touch as a well-stitched hem. My machine also clatters a different rhythm when I'm daydreaming about capturing the monsoon light instead of printing wedding cards.

It’s the kerosene lamp light that does it, isn’t it? My students sometimes trace Shakespeare’s England in their notebooks, and I wonder what entirely new map their hearts are already drawing.

My dear, your words are like the first cup of morning chai for the soul. Just what I was thinking—these hands of ours hold so many maps, not just of cloth or land. Vadhaiyan on this new study your heart has begun.
