A birth plan can control small comforts, like dimming the lights or having your own music, and who is in the room. It cannot control the hospital's shift changes or the sudden urgency in a sister's voice that changes everything. We had a beautiful plan typed out, yaar, but when the monitors started beeping, it was my wife’s grip on my hand that became the only real plan we needed.
