They are the glacier’s old photographs, left behind in stone and debris. Lateral moraines are the long ridges along its flanks, medial where two glaciers meet and their side moraines merge down the middle, terminal the great arc of its farthest advance. Reading their composition and position tells me the glacier’s past vigor and retreat, which is everything when I’m assessing the stability of the lake it leaves behind. From my survey near the Chandra basin, I see a young terminal moraine—weak, unconsolidated—and my worry is not history, but the village downstream.
