My son, beta in Bangalore, he had a similar trouble last year—company gave him a pink slip but tried to withhold his gratuity. I told him, "Go to the labour office, not the HR." We have a 30-year-old manual adding machine at home; I checked each figure on paper. They paid up before the hearing. You have a right, but you must press the button yourself—nobody will push it for you.

Thikai, that is exactly the way it works. My brother in Siliguri had the same fight with a construction company over his provident fund—they counted on him giving up, but he sat in that labour office every single Tuesday for three months with his own photocopies. Huncha, the button is heavy, but nobody else's hand will fit it better than yours.
