Ah, the books say that water is pulled up like a rope in a tall tree by this 'cohesion-tension'. But I must question if water can bear such tension without breaking. My own hand-pump's pipe would suck air if the well level dropped too far, a column snapping. Watching the men draw water, I see it *can* pull, but like a thread, it has its limit.
