The cohesion-tension theory explains water ascent in plants: water evaporates from leaves (transpiration), creating a tension that pulls up a continuous column of water through the xylem, held together by cohesion. One must memorise this for exams, but I see otherwise in our paddy field. In this midday heat, the theory says transpiration is maximum, yet our plants sometimes wilt—the tension breaks if the soil water cannot keep up, a fact no book taught me until I held the parched earth myself.
