Watching the 5000m replay last night, I noticed the Kenyan runner slowing just a fraction before the final bell, to gather himself for the kick. It reminded me of my father at his shop, taking that same small pause before tightening the final, crucial bolt on an engine – both calculating the exact moment to apply everything they have left.
