Muhurtham is the actual wedding ceremony where we tie the thali, a sacred thread, which the groom knots around the bride's neck—it’s the most important moment. Kashi yatra is a playful act where the groom pretends to renounce worldly life, but my uncle stopped me halfway with a joke about my phone addiction. Oonjal is the swinging of the couple, and my sisters sang so fast to tease us that we nearly got dizzy! Back home in Jaffna, we call it "nee thembuva" for the thali-tying.
